One of the battle cries of the Protestant Reformation was Sola Scriptura – Scripture Alone. In contrast to the great majority of Christians, the Protestants believed that the Bible – and only the Bible – was the infallible authority over the life, worship, and doctrine of the church. While they believed that tradition was important, the traditions of men could not be considered authoritative if at odds with God’s written Word.

Here we are, 500 years later. Have we evangelicals fallen prey to the same error that led, in part, to that Reformation? Sadly, the answer is yes. Make no mistake: there is an evangelical tradition. It is a tradition that has somehow become the model for understanding the Bible. How we talk about things like salvation, sin, worship, the Holy Spirit, the history of redemption, the Fall of man, and even the purpose and mission of the church has been so colored by tradition that on many points we have allowed the Bible to become a servant of our traditions and doctrinal systems.

The goal of my ministry is to help others let the Bible – and only the Bible – have the final word on how we as Christians and as the church understand Who God is and who we are. We must let the Bible speak for itself, even if means abandoning the traditions we’ve been taught and hold so dear.

God has spoken. Let us hear.
